A Week on Broadway

“A Week on Broadway” is a first-of-its-kind initiative at Auburn University that brings the energy, artistry, and rigor of Broadway-level dance training to the Plains.

This five-day residency welcomes esteemed guest artists from the Broadway Dance Center for an immersive week of master classes, workshops and artist talks open to university students, high school dancers and community members.

Designed to inspire, educate, and connect, the program offers participants a rare opportunity to train with world-class professionals, explore career pathways in dance, and build meaningful connections within the field—culminating in a scholarship audition with awards to study at the Broadway Dance Center in New York City.

“A Week on Broadway” culminates in two scholarship auditions—one for university-level students and one for high school dancers. These in-person auditions offer participants the opportunity to earn a scholarship to study at the Broadway Dance Center in New York City. Each audition will last approximately two hours and will focus on technique, progressions, theater dance, and street styles.

Auditions are free and open to both high school and university students. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.

As part of “A Week on Broadway,” visiting faculty from the Broadway Dance Center in New York will lead university and high school students as well as community members from across the region in a weeklong series of dance-focused master classes and workshops. 

These esteemed guest faculty members represent the very best of the professional dance world—artists whose experience spans Broadway stages, international tours, television, film and major commercial projects. Each instructor brings real-world insight, technical mastery, and a passion for developing the next generation of artists.

Cornelius Carter

Cornelius Carter is the former director of dance at the University of Alabama and artistic director of the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre. A nationally recognized educator, Carter received the National Outstanding Doctoral and Research Universities Professor of the Year award from CASE and the Carnegie Foundation, as well as the Alabama Alumni Association’s Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award.

Carter earned his M.F.A. in Dance from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa and trained at Webster University, The Ailey School, and with the Cleo Robinson Parker Dance Ensemble. He has held faculty and leadership roles with American Ballet Theatre, the American Dance Festival, and the Harvard Summer Dance Festival. His choreography has been presented internationally, including in Europe, Canada, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. He currently serves as faculty-in-residence at Broadway Dance Center in New York.

April Cook

April Cook (she/her) has been a member of Broadway Dance Center’s tap faculty since 2004. She received her early training with Gene Medler of the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble and Barbara Morgan Eaves at Rhythm Dance Studio. Cook teaches nationally and internationally and regularly serves as a judge and faculty member for major competitions and conventions. At Broadway Dance Center, she has led and created numerous projects, including the annual Student Showcase and the Rhythm Arts Project.

Her professional experience includes guest teaching at the Osaka School of Music, instruction with Rosie’s Theater Kids, and national performance work with Savion Glover. Cook’s performance and choreography credits span television, live events, and concert stages, including Good Morning America, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, ABC World News Now, and Radio City Music Hall.

Tanner Lane

Tanner Lane (he/him) is a New York City–based performer and choreographer on faculty at Broadway Dance Center. Originally from Florida, Lane relocated to New York after earning a degree in Musical Theatre from Florida State University. Shortly thereafter, he joined the national and international tour of Chicago the Musical, performing throughout the United States as well as in South Korea, Japan and the Philippines.

In New York City, Lane has appeared as both a singer and dancer in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. His regional theater credits include Joseph… and Billy Elliot at The Muny, Bye Bye Birdie at Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma City, and A Chorus Line at Stages St. Louis. In addition to performing, he serves on the faculty of Deviate Dance Convention, teaching theatre, jazz, and heels, and regularly choreographs competition pieces and leads masterclasses nationwide.

Carlos Neto

Carlos Neto (he/him) began intensive martial arts training in Europe at age six, earning national and international recognition throughout the 1990s. A native of Portugal, Neto appeared in primetime television and film before relocating to the United Kingdom in 2004, where he trained as a dancer and earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in international journalism from Cardiff University. He later studied acting at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City.

Neto’s performance credits include the Dutch production BLAZE, London’s Some Like It Hip Hop, and motion-capture work for Grease and Sony’s Dance Star Party. His choreography and creative work spans major global brands, recording artists, professional sports teams, and Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. A former creative director for World of Dance, he received a 2014 NYIT Award for Outstanding Choreography and currently works between New York and London as a choreographer and actor.
